“Taking to the sea” has helped heal me. When I was in the throws of chemo, I would close my eyes and go to the shore. I would visualize my tow-headed sons chasing the waves or building drip castles at my feet or simply stare at the waves rhythmically and predictably lapping at the white sand. I could feel the warm sun on my body and imagine a time when there was no scar from the bottom of my breast to the top of my pubic area. The majesty of nature has a way of cleansing even when one is stranded on machines.
